FORT ST. JOHN: BC Hydro is contributing $20,000 to support two Peace Region non-profit groups through the Site C project’s Generate Opportunities (GO) Fund.
The award recipients are programs that provide an affordable meal service for local seniors and medically vulnerable persons in Fort St. John, and free and healthy meals to vulnerable children, parents, caregivers, seniors and First Nation elders in Chetwynd.
Recipients receiving the grants include:
- Northern Environmental Action Team: $10,000 for a subsidized 'Meals on Wheels' program that connects seniors and medically vulnerable persons in and around Fort St. John. Each participant receives up to five homemade dinners each week delivered by local volunteers. This is the third grant the Northern Environmental Action Team has received through BC Hydro’s GO Fund.
- Chetwynd Public Library Association: $10,000 for the AlphaBITES program that funds healthy meals for the Chetwynd Public Library’s programming. The AlphaBITES program provides healthy snacks and meals to vulnerable children, parents, caregivers, seniors and First Nation elders, where there may be limited access to fresh and healthy food choices. This is the third grant the Chetwynd Public Library has received through BC Hydro’s GO Fund.
To date, 65 projects have received $572,566 from the $800,000 fund, which was established in September 2016 to support non-profit organizations in the north and south Peace Region throughout construction of Site C.
