Environmental Programs

Our goal is to protect the environment and reduce the environmental impacts of Site C. Our programs focus on protecting wildlife, fish, vegetation, air, water, the aquatic environment, as well as heritage and archaeology.

Environmental Programs

Our goal is to protect the environment and reduce, as much as possible, the environmental impacts of Site C, and to ensure the project complies with all its environmental approvals and conditions.

After years of study and a rigorous environmental assessment by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency and the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office, followed by a second layer of oversight and decision making through the Joint Panel Review, we received the Provincial Environmental Assessment Certificate and the Federal Decision Statement for the Site C project in 2014.

In preparation for the project, we had conducted years of comprehensive studies to understand the effects of the project, and the potential mitigation measures. These resulted in the Environmental Impact Statement, which was used in the environmental assessment. 

The resulting federal and provincial certificates we received included over 1,000 conditions that we are required to follow while building and operating the Site C dam. These conditions focus on avoiding, reducing or compensating for the potential effects that could result from the project.

Our environmental programs are built on these conditions. They focus on protecting wildlife, fish, vegetation, air, water, the aquatic environment, as well as heritage and archaeology. Throughout the process, we've worked closely with Indigenous groups to develop programs that build on their knowledge and understanding. We've also involved stakeholders and the public.
